Kīlauea

On May 3rd, 2018, 16-year-old Keoka is jolted awake in Leilani Estates by the eruption of Kīlauea volcano. As lava and toxic gases tear through his neighborhood, he escapes with the emergency supplies his late grandfather had insisted he keep. Battling earthquakes, ash, and sulfur fumes, Keoka helps others as he makes his way toward safety in Pāhoa. When the first shelter is full, he meets another teen, Keahi, and the two set off together for a distant shelter. During their perilous night journey, they bond over shared memories and hopes, finally reaching safety at the Kea‘au Armory. Though Keoka has lost everything, he finds comfort and strength in connection, realizing that home can be rebuilt through the people we meet along the way.
